Battle of the Drums Translation Contest

The Battle of the Drums organized the first Primary Schools Garifuna Translation Quiz Contest in 2008. This Contest is held annually since then.  It is a contest that tests the participants’ ability to translate different words, phrases, proverbs, and sentences from Standard English to Garifuna.

Objectives:

1. To introduce students to the pronunciation and meaning of various Garifuna words, proverbs, and phrases;

2. To test the participants’ ability to translate different words, proverbs, phrases, and sentences from Standard English to Garifuna.

3. To enhance students’ knowledge and appreciation of the Garifuna language.

Target Schools:  4 primary schools in Punta Gorda Town and one primary school from Barranco Village. In the year 2012, the contest was expanded to include Richard Quinn Primary School from Georgetown Village and St. Alphonsus Primary School from Seine Bight Village. In 2016 Holy Family R.C. School from Hopkins Village will join the contest.
