In Garifuna communities across the globe, April 12th is regarded as Garifuna Survival Day. It marks the anniversary of the arrival, in 1797, of the Garinagu to Roatan, Honduras after being banished hundreds of miles from their native homeland of St. Vincent, by the British. On that fateful day, 9 British ships loaded with their Garinagu prisoners, arrived on Roatan and offloaded their human cargo on the largely uninhabited island at a place now known as Punta Gorda, Roatan, Honduras.

For the first time in the 227 years after this atrocious reality, it is commemorated in Peini Punta Gorda Belize, and it was organized by the Battle of the Drums Secretariat. Peini was originally founded by the Garinagu sometime around 1823. The Garifuna Survival Day event was held at the Central Park in Peini and it featured prayers, speeches, and presentations by school children, youth groups, and adults, as well as, by the Peini Garifuna Choir. Musical entertainment was provided by Georgie’s Garifuna Drummers and New Edition Band.

Two songs that were sung by the Peini Garifuna Choir resonated well with the audience; namely, Luagu Ubou Balliceaux whose lyrics reminded us that, “it was on the island of Balliceaux that we sat and we cried” in a state of utter hopelessness and pity after the initial imprisonment of our people, by the British. The second song, Duna Orinagu, encourages our people to seek learning and intelligence. It also reminds us that educational institutions are available for us to seek advancement to ensure that we do not become the lowly of the earth.

At the end of the event the President of the Battle of the Drums, Darius Avila reminded the audience that the reason that the organization spearheaded the event was because “it is aligned to our organization’s strategic goal of pursuing Garifuna Cultural Retrieval and Preservation”. During the event, in line with the organization’s strategic program of providing support to Garifuna groups that are engaged in some aspect of Garifuna preservation, the President presented pledges of financial support to Georgies Garifuna Drummers (a young Garifuna drumming group) in the amount of $800.00 to purchase uniforms, to Peini Garifuna Choir for $800 to purchase uniforms and to the National Garifuna Council-Peini Branch, $1,200 to assist in covering the cost of annual Garifuna Re-enactment Ceremony (Yurumein) and to assist meeting the cost of Garifuna drumming during the 19 th of November festivities, this year.

This momentous occasion marks a significant milestone in our collective efforts to revitalize and preserve the rich cultural heritage embodied in the Garifuna language.

The launch of the Garifuna Language in Schools Program is a testament to the collaborative endeavors between the National Garifuna Council and the Battle of the Drums Secretariat. By implementing this program in selected communities of Barranco, Punta Gorda, Georgetown, Seine Bight, Hopkins, and Dangriga, we reaffirm our unwavering commitment to safeguarding and revitalizing our ancestral language for the benefit of present and future generations.

The event saw distinguished guests, including the Minister of Human Development, Families, and Indigenous Peoples’ Affairs, Hon. Dolores Balderamos Garcia, who expressed her ministry’s full support for the Garifuna Language in Schools Program. She reaffirmed the indigenous identity of the Garifuna people in Belize and the need to provide support the keep the culture intact. Also in attendance was the Minister of State in the Ministry of Education, Culture, Science and Technology, Dr. Hon. Louis Zabaneh. He highlighted the importance of the 2001 UNESCO declaration that recognizes the Garifuna Language, Dance, and Music as a “Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity”, the significance of the Garifuna Language in Schools programs, and its alignment to the macro-competency number 5 of the national curriculum of the Ministry of Education and pledged his support to this vital initiative.

Reflecting on the occasion, the President of the Battle of the Drums, Darius Avila expressed regret that such an initiative wasn’t undertaken earlier but expressed delight that this pivotal moment has finally arrived. He also reminded us that as Garinagu “we have a collective obligation to be engaged in the preservation of our culture”.

President of the National Garifuna Council, Sheena Zuniga, underscored the importance of preserving cultural heritage through the transmission of the ancestral language to future generations. “Our dedication to reclaiming Garifuna as the language of the home is paramount,” stated Zuniga. “We recognize that the survival of our language hinges upon its transmission to our children, and we urge Garifuna parents to embrace this responsibility wholeheartedly.”

A woman reeling with emptiness and crying uncontrollably…a child, bewildered, feeling confused and lost and trying to console her Mom even though she herself needs consolation. A man, broken in spirit; still limping from the injury he suffered during the war and exacerbated by the month-long travel to a place unknown, hundreds of miles from his native homeland…devastated with the capture and subsequent banishment of him and his people…staring at his wife with a feeling of utter hopelessness in their circumstances but having the quiet resolve to survive and thrive…
Along with the other 2,023 who had survived the inhumane and treacherous journey, this day would be the first day of the rest of their uncertain existence. This day was, Wednesday, April 12, 1797, and the place was Roatan, Honduras.
Today, Tuesday, April 12, 2022, marks 225 years, since 2,026 Garinagu were dumped onto the shores of Roatan, Honduras by the British, after their forcible removal and deportation from their native homeland of St. Vincent. Their plight began in 1773, after the Garinagu, in defense of their land, defeated the British in what was referred to as the “First Carib War”. Being the superpower that it was, it was a blow to the British ego that men of inferior arms could defeat them in war. So they spent the next twenty-two years reinforcing and strategizing and declared war on the Garinagu again in March 1795. Unfortunately, on March 14, 1795, the Paramount Chief of the Garinagu, Joseph Chatoyer, a fearless military strategist was killed. Notwithstanding, the war waged on until the Garinagu surrendered in June 1796.
As a result of the surrender, Garifuna villages were burnt to the ground. Some men, women, and children were massacred, while others were hunted down and gathered to become the next victims of atrocity that was unleashed by the British. During the period July 1796 and March 1797, Garifuna men, women, and children were forcibly taken and kept in confinement on a desolate, barren island sitting on steep cliffs located in the most eastern Grenadine island in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, miles from St. Vincent, and fit for only reptiles to live, by the name of Balliceaux. Between 4,195 and 5,200 Garinagu were kept as prisoners on Balliceaux.
Approximately half the number of those who were confined on Balliceaux died either by committing suicide by jumping off the steep cliffs or as a result of the epidemic that spread within their number. On March 3, 1797, the remaining 2,700 Garinagu were loaded onto a convoy of British Battleships and banished forever from their native homeland. 674 Garinagu perished during that journey and the remaining 2,026 arrived in Roatan, Honduras on Wednesday, April 12, 1797. Since then we have not only survived, but we have thrived.
The Battle of the Drums Secretariat strongly encourages all Garinagu, to honor the legacy of our forefathers and not only survive but thrive…We owe them no less. In the words of the song, Duna Orinagu, “Meredera wamá agumahouni ya ubouwagu” (English translation: “Let us not be the least on this earth”) and in the words of the Matriarch of the Battle of the Drums, “Bungiu Wama!!” (God with us!!).
