Battle of the Drums Launches Hamalali Wanigu Album and Music Awards Initiative

Belize City, Belize – April 17, 2026 — The Battle of the Drums Secretariat proudly announces the official launch of the Hamalali Wanigu Album and Music Awards, a groundbreaking initiative created to elevate Garifuna music, celebrate Belizean talent, and create new opportunities for local artists worldwide.

This major cultural milestone marks a new chapter for the organization’s long-standing commitment to preserving and promoting Garifuna heritage through music. Since 2017, the Belize Garifuna Song Competition has produced more than fifty original Garifuna songs, each reflecting the strength, rhythm, and identity of the Garifuna people.

Now, the Battle of the Drums Secretariat is taking that legacy even further.

A New Era for Garifuna Music

The Hamalali Wanigu Album and Music Awards Initiative introduces a professional framework that helps artists move beyond local recognition and into the global music marketplace. Through this initiative, participating artists benefit from:

Global Music Distribution – Songs are professionally remastered and prepared for release on major streaming platforms, helping Garifuna music reach listeners across the world.

Royalties and Rights Protection – Artists gain access to structured royalty systems that ensure they and their families can benefit financially from their music for years to come.

Greater Exposure – Garifuna musicians receive new opportunities for branding, promotion, and audience growth both in Belize and internationally.

Professional Growth – The initiative also connects artists with industry standards, networks, and development opportunities that support long-term careers.

Hamalali Wanigu — Voices of Our People

At the center of this movement is the album Hamalali Wanigu, which translates to “Voices of Our People.” This powerful compilation features nine original Garifuna songs selected from the Belize Garifuna Song Competition and recognized for excellence in multiple award categories.

Together, the tracks showcase storytelling, culture, creativity, and the vibrant future of Garifuna music. The album was officially launched on Friday, April 17, 2026, at the Bliss Institute for the Performing Arts in Belize City during the Hamalali Wanigu Album Launch and Music Awards.

The live event featured a multi-generational lineup of Garifuna artists, highlighting both rising stars and established icons, including:

  • Delvin “Pen” Cayetano – King of Punta Rock
  • Horace “Mohobob” Flores
  • Herman “Chico” Ramos
  • Peter “Poots” Flores
  • Adrian “The Doc” Martinez

The evening also paid tribute to legendary Garifuna cultural figures:

  • Andy Palacio
  • Paul Nabor
  • Aurelio Martinez

Why This Matters
